Second Life Writer Community
Second life has a large writer community. I have added this page to make writers aware of SL possibilities and opportunities. There are a great number of writer groups in SL. Many authors do readings of their poetry, short stories, and novels. Join the Podcasters and get your writing on the internet air. I will soon be podcasting several of my short stories, a great way to introduce readers to my style of writing. I am also doing a reading of my novel, Draegon's Lair, in SL. When finished, I plan to move onto my next novel. Though I write romantic adventure/romance, I have learned much from familiarizing myself with other genres. I've met some really great people who write horror, vampires, fantasy, medieval celtic, etc. Though I've been in SL for 8 months, I know I've merely touched on its many possibilities. There is so much more available to me and I plan to take advantage of it. Also, SL is a great place to hold meetings. I'm encouraging my writer group to meet there. As we're all spread out over western Pennsylvania., meeting is difficult, especially during the winter months. In SL there is no travel time or inclement weather problems. We will all be there audibly and represented physically by our avatars. Big business has already recognized the profit in holding meetings in SL. No wasted travel time or travel and hotel expenses.

Preparing for SL: There is a learning curve and possible need to upgrade your video card and invest in headphones and mic if you don't already have them. Check out the specs on the SL webpage. For the best performance, be sure you meet or exceed video card specs. It can be frustrating when you can't see or move properly. I replaced my video card and got a set of HP earphones and mic and have had very few problems. In fact, my only problems are occasional SL glitches, which happens--after all, it is technology.

Under Construction
Once you get past the idea that SL is a game, you will discover it to be much more, and you will be amazed at what holds it together. Many people are just playing out their fantasies or second lives, but there is a large artist community that binds second life together. The creators. I'm still amazed at the work and artistic and technological talent that goes into this program to make it so unique and interesting. I have just started learning to build and I can only describe it as totally immersing, interesting, enjoyable and frustrating at once. Like any art project, it's a matter of try this, try that, and see what works. Those who have become proficient in the creation of this world have my utmost admiration. Besides the creators, another artist and event community keeps SL alive: writers, artists, photographers, musicians, storytellers, event planners, etc. SECOND LIFE--It's worth a second look.
